Our Musical Director
Band Member Profile - Brian Webber F.L.C.M., L.R.A.M.(Musical Director)
Brian had a happy childhood growing up as an only child in rural Gloucestershire and was attracted to music at an early age. At 18 he was awarded a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At the end of his second year of studies he was chosen by Sir Yehudi Menuhin for a scholarship to study chamber music in Germany where he lived in a castle for 2 months.
By the time he left the Academy after four years study he was already an experienced freelance viola player and began to combine this work with violin teaching. He quickly realised that he enjoyed teaching young people and began to expand this area of his work. Soon afterwards he was offered a part-time position as professor of violin & viola at the prestigious Cheltenham Ladies College, where he worked for more than 20 years until leaving for Spain.
He continued working as a freelance musician and has performed with many of the world’s leading conductors & soloists, including a week working with Sir Michael Tippett, recording a programme for his 80th birthday celebration for the BBC.
Since arriving in Spain in 1994, Brian has continued to play & teach. He was elected professor of chamber music at the Conservatoire in Murcia and also played in the regional symphony orchestra, where he combined work as assistant conductor and principal viola player. In 2003, he was invited to direct a concert with the Cartagena Chamber Orchestra and was elected their principal conductor, a post he retained until his recent retirement.
